How to Protect Your Plumbing for the Next Big Storm

Posted on August 30, 2021

This time of year, when temperatures are high, storms start to form in the ocean. Those of us who’ve lived in South Florida long enough know a thing or two about how to react – prepare, prepare, prepare.
We all experience a collective sigh of relief when a storm pivots to our advantage. But it’s best to also be prepared for when we’re at a disadvantage. And that includes our plumbing.

Here’s how to protect your plumbing for the next big storm.

Before the storm …

  • Stock up on water in the bathrooms and the kitchen, so you’re able to flush the toilets and wash your hands.
  • Turn off your main water valve to prevent contaminated water from getting into your plumbing system.
  • Turn off your water heater to avoid undue stress on your plumbing system
  • Remove leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts, and drains so rainwater drains the way it’s supposed to and underground pipes don’t get overwhelmed by dirt and debris.

After the storm …

  • Contact your city to find out about the status of your water supply. If it’s safe, switch the main valve back on.
  • Once it’s safe to go outside, clear the debris from your gutters, downspouts, and drains.
  • Look for upturned and displaced trees and shrubs that can become a problem for underground pipes down the line.
