Everyone has their shower routine down to their own personal science. Some people like to mentally outline their day while letting the spray fully wake them in the mornings. Others enjoy a long, hot shower at the end of the day to wash away their stresses. And while that invigorating feeling we all have after a nice shower is great, some bath time habits could impact your bathroom plumbing in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Here are three bad shower habits that can ruin your plumbing:

Bad habit #1: long, hot showers!

Everyone loves a nice, hot shower. But while you might find it personally beneficial, your bathroom may suffer long-term consequences. The overly warm environment left behind after a hot shower creates the perfect environment for mold to grow. To prevent the growth, use proper ventilation to eliminate humidity. Keep a window or door open, run a fan, adjust your water temperature to moderately warm, and limit your shower time to ten minutes.

Bad habit #2: letting hair go down the drain!

People naturally lose between 50 and 100 strands of hair a day, and that number can increase when you rough it up with shampoo or have longer hair. Now multiply that number by the number of people sharing that bathroom and the number of showers you all take in any given week. Now imagine the problems that could cause! Hair that collects in your drains and accumulates in your pipes can eventually lead to blockage. To make sure that doesn’t happen, use a drain cover or drain stop to catch stray hairs.

Bad habit #3: not cleaning your shower often enough!

Hair isn’t the only thing that can cause problems in your pipes. When you shower, soap, dead skin cells, and dirt collected throughout the day wash down the drain and into your pipes. All that dirt and grime can easily clog your pipes as it begins to build up. Try to clean your bathroom regularly to avoid major problems.
